Iconic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan designed both the obverse and reverse. Obverse: On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty, whom Morgan depicts as an American-style figure. She dons a Phrygian cap, a ribbon, and a crown of cotton and wheat, a Southern crop and a Northern one. Encircling her effigy are thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1888."
Reverse: An eagle that is partially encircled by an open wreath spreads its wings toward the rim on the reverse. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the wings. Along the rim are inscriptions that note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
