Novel Patriotic Designs by George T. Morgan

The seventh Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, George T. Morgan, from whom this coin takes its name, designed both faces. Obverse: Morgan broke with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure and instead depicted her as an American-style figure on the obverse. He shows her wearing a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, and a crown that represents unity, as it consists of one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. The image is encircled by two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1888," and thirteen stars.

Reverse: On the reverse, an open wreath partially encircles an eagle, which holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the bird's wings. Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
