Why purchase this Morgan 1888 Silver Dollar?
American coin collectors and non-collectors alike feel a special affinity to the Morgan Silver Dollar. While most other historic coins are forgotten by all but collectors in time, Morgans continue to be passed down as heirlooms and treasured by those who own them even among those who have never collected anything else. This piece comes from the tenth anniversary of the historic series, which helped to heal a divided nation with symbols of national identity and unity. Struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin was part of a mintage of 19,183,000 pieces.
Featuring the Classic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
This series is named after the man who designed it George T. Morgan. Morgan helped to give a young nation identity by depicting Liberty as an American-style figure rather than a Greek-style one, as was tradition. Modeled after Anna Willess Williams, she faces left and wears a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave and covers some of her long, curly hair. She also dons a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown that symbolizes national unity. The crown is made of one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. Encircling this image along the rim are two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1888," and thirteen stars, which represent the country's original states.
Two inscriptions that note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR," encircle the image on the reverse. That image consists of an eagle holding arrows and an olive branch and an open wreath that partially encircles it. The arrows express America's willingness to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates a preference for peace. Between the eagle's wings, which stretch toward the rim, is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."
