Why purchase this Silver 1888 Morgan Dollar?

This 1888 Silver Morgan Dollar comes from the tenth anniversary issue of the iconic series. Morgans helped to heal the nation following the bloody Civil War, helping to forge both a unique identity and national unity. That is one of the reasons that the coins are often passed down through generations even in families that are not collectors. Part of a mintage of 19,183,000 pieces, this coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a .7734 oz planchet of .900 fine silver.

Featuring the Classic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan

Both the obverse and reverse were designed by George T. Morgan, for whom this coin is named. The obverse features a left-side portrait of Liberty. Morgan used an American style model for her, thus breaking from the tradition of showing her as a Greek style figure. On her head are a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears her name, and a crown of cotton and wheat. The cap identifies her as a freed slave, while the crown, which consists of one Southern crop and one Northern one, represents national unity. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" arches over the image, and the date, "1888," is included below. The two rim inscriptions are joined by thirteen stars, symbols of the original states.

A heraldic eagle holds arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The olive branch expresses a desire for peace, while the arrows serve as reminders of America's willingness to defend her values. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the eagle's wings, and the bird is partially encircled by an open wreath. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rim.

Beautifully Preserved MS64

The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded this coin a grade of Mint State 64. That means that it has at least an average strike and lacks any traces of wear.
