The coin was struck at the Philadelphia Branch of the U.S. Mint, which was established in 1792 as the Nation's first Mint. The series was struck on 90% silver, 10% copper planchets which all contain .7734 oz. of silver. The total mintage of this issue was 19,183,000. One of the most collected designs in American coinageThe designer of the coin, George T. Morgan was an English Immigrant who came to the U.S. at the age of 31 to be assistant to Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, Charles Barber. One of the first assignments for Mr. Morgan was the design of the new Silver Dollar. This iconic design which became known as the "Morgan Dollar" features the profile of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet on which her name is inscribed. She also wears a Phrygian cap and has wheat, English Ivy and oak leaves in her hair. The reverse of the coin features a laurel wreath that encircles a bald eagle that clutches arrows and an olive branch.
