Why order this 1888 Silver Morgan Dollar?
The Morgan Silver Dollar holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Americans. The coin departed from the long tradition of showing Liberty as a Greek-style figure while also bringing a divided nation together with powerful symbolism. Part of the tenth anniversary issue, this coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. It comes from a mintage of 19,183,000 pieces and will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Striking Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Both faces of this coin bear the designs of George T. Morgan, for whom the series is named. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty in which she appears as an American-style figure. Morgan modeled her on Anna Willess Williams. She has long, curly hair that is partially covered by a Phrygian cap, which indicates that she is a freed slave. She also wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown made from cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. Her effigy is encircled by two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1888," and thirteen stars, symbols of the original states.
The reverse features a heraldic eagle that clutches arrows, symbols of military readiness, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace. Partially encircling the bird is an open wreath. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the eagle's outstretched wings. Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
