Why purchase this 1887 Silver Morgan Dollar?
This 1887 piece would make a fantastic addition to any collection of Morgan Silver Dollars. Coins from the series are beloved pieces of Americana thanks in part to the decision of designer George T. Morgan to render Liberty in an American-style rather than Greek-style, as was tradition at the time. This coin comes from the tenth issue of the series and was struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
Powerful Eagle Design by George T. Morgan
Obverse: Designer George T. Morgan's obverse design shows Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, and a crown. The crown is a powerful symbol of unity, as it consists of one Northern crop, wheat, and one Southern crop, cotton. Thirteen stars connected two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1887."
Reverse: An eagle spreads its wings while holding symbols of military readiness, arrows, and peace, an olive branch, in Morgan's reverse design. It is partially encircled by an open wreath, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
