Why purchase this Silver 1887 Morgan Dollar?

No coin has forged for itself a place in Americana quite like the Morgan Silver Dollar. The coin was first issued in the decade following the Civil War and helped a broken nation heal with a new, common identity. This piece comes from the Philadelphia Mint and was struck as part of the tenth issue in the series.

  • This coin comes from a mintage of 20,290,000 pieces.
  • It was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 26.73 g of .900 fine silver.
  • This piece was $1 U.S. legal tender.
  • Morgan's Liberty design broke with long standing tradition.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this piece Mint State 64.
  • The coin qualified for NGC's Green Label.

Novel Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

Obverse: George T. Morgan designed both faces of this coin. The obverse bears a left-side portrait of Liberty, who wears a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, and a crown of cotton and wheat. Along the rim are the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1887," which are connected by thirteen stars.

Reverse: The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim of the reverse. They encircle an open wreath, which itself partially encircles an eagle that clutches arrows and an olive branch. Between the bird's outstretched wings is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST."

Beautifully Preserved MS64 with Green Label

This coin's grade is provided on a Green Label. That grade is Mint State 64 and comes from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). A Mint State 64 grade means that the coin has an average or better strike and lacks any traces of wear. This Morgan Silver Dollar qualified for the prestigious Green Label which is only awarded to coins that have meet strict standards set by Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA), a leading numismatic distributor. Before being submitted to grading at NGC, RARCOA selects examples of coins that include features such outstanding eye-appeal, razor-sharp strike, booming luster, or outstanding toning toning. This Green Label gives collectors the opportunity to craft a visually stunning collection backed by RARCOA's standards of excellence and NGC's authentication and grading process.
