1887 marked the tenth year of issue of the U.S. Mint's Morgan Silver Dollar series. Imagery for the dollar denomination coin was created by George T. Morgan, who was appointed as the Mint's seventh Chief Engraver in 1917. Struck from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver, this coin is one of the 20,290,000 Morgan Silver Dollars released from the Philadelphia Mint in 1887.
Gorgeous Symbols of Liberty and Freedom
Liberty is portrayed on the obverse facing left, wearing a Phrygian cap, which is symbolic of freedom and the pursuit of liberty. The cap's band is inscribed with "LIBERTY" and adorned with sprigs of wheat, cotton and oak. Liberty's likeness is encircled by thirteen stars to represent the original colonies, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1887."
"UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" frame the image of an eagle holding an olive branch and three arrows on the reverse. A ribbon-tied laurel wreath partially wraps the eagle from below, with "IN GOD WE TRUST" inscribed on a banner between the eagle's outstretched wings.
