Why does this Mint State Morgan Silver Dollar struck in 1887 belong in your collection?
The tenth year of issue of the U.S. Mint's Morgan Silver Dollar series was 1887. Imagery of the coin features the artistic skill of George T. Morgan, who was appointed as the Mint's seventh Chief Engraver in 1917.
Gorgeous Symbols of Liberty and Freedom
Obverse: Lady Liberty is centered on the obverse wearing a Phrygian cap, which is symbolic of freedom and the pursuit of liberty. The cap's band is inscribed with "LIBERTY" and adorned with sprigs of wheat, cotton and oak. Liberty's likeness is encircled by "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1887" and thirteen stars as a representation of the original colonies.
Reverse: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" encircle the image of an eagle holding an olive branch and three arrows on the reverse. A ribbon-tied laurel wreath partially wraps the eagle from below, with "IN GOD WE TRUST" inscribed between the eagle's outstretched wings.
