Why Choose This MS65 VAM-12 1887 Morgan Dollar from the Great Montana Collection?

Morgan silver dollars were widely used during their time in circulation. These coins were struck by the U.S. Mint from 1878 through 1904 and also in 1921. The Philadelphia Mint struck this silver dollar in 1887. There were 20,290,000 of these minted. This specific coin happens to display the desirable VAM-12 die variety, of which only a portion of 1887 Morgan dollars have. This coin was also a part of the Great Montana Collection. The Great Montana Collection is a coin hoard that was discovered in 1998, it was made of somewhere around 17,000 coins.

1887 VAM-12 Variety

The VAM-12 variety can be identified on the obverse. This particular variety is also known as the Alligator Eye Morgan dollar. It got this name because of the vertical bar that can be seen on Liberty's eye.

George T. Morgan's classic bald eagle design is on the reverse. Since this coin was struck in Philadelphia, it doesn't have a Mint mark. The bald eagle is holding its wings high and its chest out.

Graded MS65

This Morgan dollar was graded and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. The experts there use a grading scale with a maximum of 70. This specimen received the grade of Mint State 65.
