Striking Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
This coin is named for George T. Morgan, who designed both of its faces. Obverse: Liberty is depicted as an American-style figure in Morgan's reverse design. Appearing in left-side profile, she wears a crown of cotton and wheat, a Phrygian cap, and a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name. Thirteen stars combine with two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1886," to encircle the image.
Reverse: On the reverse, an open wreath partially encircles an eagle, which holds arrows and an olive branch. The bird spreads its wings toward the rim in a V-shape, within which is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
