Why buy this Morgan 1886 Silver Dollar?
Those looking for an affordable yet well preserved Morgan would do well to get this 1886 Silver Morgan Dollar. The Morgan dollar is one of the most recognizable and beloved coins in American history. This piece was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .900 fine silver and has a silver weight of .7734 troy oz. It was part of a mintage of 19,963,000 pieces.
Pioneering Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan designed both faces of this silver dollar. The obverse features his stunning portrait of Liberty, which broke from tradition by Morgan's use of an American figure, Anna Willess Williams, as his model as opposed to a Greek figure. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, which symbolizes her freedom, a crown of two staple American crops, cotton and wheat, and a ribbon that bears her name, "LIBERTY."
On the reverse, an eagle has its wings stretched upward in a V-shape. In one talon it clutches arrows, symbols of military readiness and in the other, it holds an olive branch, which is indicative of a preference for peace. A wreath arches under the image and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the wings.
Uncirculated Mint State 64
This coin received a grade of Mint State 64 from the experts at the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it has at least an average strike and bears obvious bag marks or hairlines and some other minuscule imperfections.
