Why add this 1886 Silver Morgan Dollar to your collection?
The Morgan Silver Dollar holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Americans. While other coins get attention only from collectors, Morgans are often prized among non-collectors. They are frequently passed down through generations. This coin comes from the ninth issue of the iconic coin. It was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. This piece remains in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Featuring George T. Morgan's Historic Liberty Design
George T. Morgan designed both faces of this iconic coin. On the obverse, Liberty faces left wearing a ribbon, a crown, and a Phrygian cap. The ribbon bears an inscription of her name, while the crown is a symbol of unity. That is because it consists of two crops, one Northern, wheat, and one Southern, cotton. The Phrygian cap traditionally identifies its wearer as a freed slave. The effigy is encircled by two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1886," and thirteen stars, which represent the original states.
A heraldic eagle spreads its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The olive branch expresses a desire for peace, while the arrows remind all that America is prepared to defend its values. An open wreath partially encircles the bird. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" encircle the image along the rim.
