Why purchase this 1885-S Liberty Head $5 Gold Half Eagle coin?
The Gold Liberty Head Half Eagle was the U.S. Mint's circulating $5 gold coin series from 1839 until 1908. The Liberty Head coin's design was created by Christian Gobrecht, who served from 1840-1844 as the Mint's third Chief Engraver. Imagery for the series was strongly influenced by Gobrecht's appreciation of Neoclassicism. The same obverse personification of Liberty and eagle graphic on the reverse appeared on the $10 Eagle and the $2.50 Quarter Eagle coins issued during the same time period.
