Why add the 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar From the New York Bank Hoard NGC MS66 to your collection?
This thrilling 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar was given the Mint State 66 (MS66) grade by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) who encapsulated it with their prestigious Green Label. A collaboration between the NGC and RARCOA (Rare Coin Company of America) resulted in the Green Label.
- The New Orleans Mint functioned over two separate periods, from 1838 until 1861 and again from 1879 until 1909.
- The Mint struck the Morgan Dollar from 1878 until 1904 when Morgan striking was halted.
- The Morgan Dollar contains .7734 oz of silver struck on a .900 pure silver planchet.
- The mintage of this issue is 9,185,000, an average number for New Orleans during that decade.
Fantastic Design Departure
Obverse: The classic obverse features Liberty's profile, facing left while wearing a tiara. Previous depictions were a full-length seated Liberty.
Reverse: The reverse of the dollar features an impressive Bald Eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch; beneath him appears a wreath. The iconic New Orleans "O" mint mark is shown beneath the wreath's bunting.
Beautiful MS66 with Excellent Green Label
Mint State 66 coins are excellent examples with full mint luster and an above average strike. Interestingly, the New Orleans Mint is known for weak strikes, as they adjusted their presses to prolong the live of the dies instead of closer for producing quality coinage. To be awarded the Green Label, prior to the coin being graded by the NGC, while also meeting or surpassing quality standards with reference to strike, luster and eye appeal established by a group of numismatic experts at RARCOA. This additional scrutiny ensures only coins of exceptional quality earn the right to bear the Green Label.
