Why purchase this 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar?

Share in the rich tradition of the Morgan Silver Dollar with this coin from 1885. The series is a beloved piece of Americana. The coin is rich in symbolism thanks to its designer George T. Morgan, who broke from the tradition of choosing a Greek-style model for Liberty in favor of choosing an American-style model for her. Coins from the series are often passed down through generations. This coin also features NGC's Green Label which was the result of a collaboration between the grading company and one of the leading coin distributors in the United States, Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA).

  • This piece was $1 US legal tender.
  • This Morgan was struck from 26.73 g of .900 fine silver.
  • This coin bears the "O" mint mark of the New Orleans Mint.
  • This coin comes from a mintage of 9,185,000 pieces.
  • The Morgan Silver Dollar is an iconic series that is recognized - and frequently collected - even by people who otherwise do not collect coins.
  • This coin was released twenty years after the end of the Civil War.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this coin Mint State 65.
  • NGC provided the grade on its distinctive Green Label.

Featuring the Famous Designs of George T. Morgan

Obverse: The coin's obverse features a left-side portrait of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap and a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, as well as a crown. The crown symbolizes national unity, as it is made from cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. Encircling the image are thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1885."

Reverse: An open wreath partially encircles an eagle in Morgan's reverse design. The bird holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. Rim inscriptions note the issuing country's name, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."

Well Preserved MS65 with Green Label

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this piece Mint State 65 and provided the grade on a green label. The Green Label is only awarded to coins that were selected by a team at RARCOA for adhering to strict guidelines pertaining to a coin's luster, strike, toning, and eye-appeal, before also being graded and encapsulated by NGC. This additional scrutiny ensures only coins of exceptional quality earn the right to bear the Green Label. In addition, to earn a Mint State 65 grade, a coin must have been struck well and still have all of its original luster.
