Why order this Silver 1885-O Morgan Dollar?

This Silver Morgan Dollar is among the most poignant symbols in American history. In the 1860's, the United States was torn apart by a Civil War. Just one mint that struck coins was in the South when the war broke out. That was the New Orleans Mint, which is represented on this coin by its "O" mint mark. That mint mark is especially powerful for this release, as 1885 marked 20 years since the end of the Civil War.

  • This coin was struck from 26.73 g of .900 fine silver.
  • This coin was $1 legal tender in the United States.
  • This piece bears the New Orleans Mint's "O" mint mark.
  • This coin comes from a mintage of 9,185,000 pieces.
  • The Morgan Silver Dollar is an iconic piece of Americana.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this coin Mint State 64.
  • This coin met the requirements to bear NGC's Green Label.

Powerful Eagle Design by George T. Morgan

Obverse: George T. Morgan's Liberty design graces the obverse. Morgan shows Liberty as an American-style figure wearing a Phrygian cap, a ribbon, and a crown of cotton and wheat. Her effigy is encircled by two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1885," and thirteen stars.

Reverse: An eagle spreads its wings toward the rim in Morgan's reverse design. The bird holds arrows and an olive branch and is partially encircled by an open wreath. "IN GOD WE TRUST," America's national motto, is inscribed between its wings. Along the rim are inscriptions that note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."

Well Maintained MS64 with Green Label

This coin's grade comes printed on a green label. The coin was graded Mint State 64 by the team at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it has an average or better strike. This grade is relayed on NGC's Green Label which indicates a two-step process that results in only coins of exceptional quality earning the right to bear the label. Prior to grading at NGC, experts at Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA) identify examples of superior quality specimens, which posses factors such as outstanding eye appeal, razor-sharp strike, booming luster, or attractive toning. Only coins that meet or exceed RARCOA's strict guidelines qualify the NGC Green Label giving collectors the opportunity to easily recognize superior quality coins.
