Why add this 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection?
Increased silver supply from western mines and the passage of the Bland-Allison Act prompted the U.S. Mint's issue of a new dollar denomination coin in 1878, designed by assistant engraver George T. Morgan. This Morgan Dollar measures 38.1 mm in diameter, struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1885 from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver, with a final mintage reported as 9,185,000 coins.
Magnificent Portrayal of Lady Liberty
Lady Liberty, whose portrait was based upon the image of Philadelphia school teacher Anna Willess Williams, is featured on the obverse, her head adorned with leaves and blooms. Inscriptions include "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1885," with "LIBERTY" upon her crown.
An eagle, the national bird of the United States, is centered on the reverse clutching three arrows and an olive branch, with "IN GOD WE TRUST" inscribed above, a wreath and the "O" Mint mark below. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" encircle the patriotic image.
