Why Buy This MS65 Toned 1885-O Morgan Dollar from the Great Montana Collection?

In 1885, this Morgan silver dollar was struck at the New Orleans branch of the U.S. Mint. These coins were a part of daily life for many American in the late 1800s and early 1900s, they were minted annually from 1878 through 1904. The 1885-O Morgan dollar had a moderate mintage of 9,185,000 pieces. The specimen offered here displays toning and was part of a hoard. It was found among the coins of the Great Montana Collection, which was discovered in 1998.

Patriotic Works of Art on Obverse and Reverse

The date can be found on the obverse near the bottom. This side shows George T. Morgan's detailed depiction of Liberty. The reverse was designed by Morgan as well, which is how these coins came to be known as Morgan dollars.

The "O" mintmark can be found on the reverse with Morgan's bald eagle design. A bundle of arrows and an olive branch can be seen in its talons as it holds its wings high.

MS65 Toned

This coin's toning and its status as a hoard coin have been recognized by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. It was found to be in gem uncirculated condition. It has few imperfections and was awarded the grade of Mint State 65.
