Why choose this Great Montana Collection 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar?
This 1885-O Silver Morgan Dollar was part of one of the largest private hoards in American history. Amassed by George Bouvier, the stash included over 17,000 pieces. Bouvier only disclosed his secret on his death bed, after which his family recovered the coins from under the floors of his store and behind the walls of his house. This coin, which is the exact one shown on this page, bears the "O" mint mark of the New Orleans Mint. It was struck there on a .900 fine silver planchet that weighs .7734 oz.
Novel Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan's obverse design holds an important place in American history because an American-style model was used for Liberty instead of a Greek-style one. Morgan shows the figure wearing a crown of two staple American crops, cotton and wheat, and a Phrygian cap.
The reverse image follows a common theme in American numismatics. An eagle holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons. A laurel wreath largely encircles the bird, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head.
Uncirculated MS63 Toned
This coin earned a Choice Uncirculated grade of Mint State 63 from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), meaning that it shows no signs of wear. Additionally, this particular coin has toning.
