Iconic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
The obverse design that George T. Morgan created for this series changed American numismatic history with its portrayal of Liberty as an American-style figure rather than a Greek-style one. Morgan used Anna Willess Williams as his model. He shows Liberty facing left with long hair that is partially covered by a Phrygian cap. She wears a crown made from two staple American crops, cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one.Rim inscriptions read, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1885." They are connected by thirteen stars, symbols of the original states.
On the reverse, a laurel wreath wraps around an eagle. The eagle holds arrows, symbols of military readiness, in one talon and an olive branch, which indicates a preference for peace, in the other. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the bird's wings, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed on the rim.
Well Preserved MS63
This coin received a Mint State 63 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it has about an average strike and shows no traces of wear.
