Why order this 1885 Silver Morgan Dollar?
The Morgan Silver Dollar helped to heal and unify a divided nation. It was first struck a little more than a decade after the end of a bloody Civil War. This piece comes from the year that marked the 20th anniversary of the end of that war. It is well preserved, making it an attractive option. This piece was part of a mintage of 17,787,000 pieces that were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1885.
Featuring the Classic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
This coin's designer, George T. Morgan, lends his name to the series. His obverse design broke with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure. Instead, he depicted her as an American-style figure, using Anna Willess Williams as his model. The figure faces left and wears a Phrygian cap that covers much of her long, curly hair. The cap traditionally identifies its wearer as a freed slave. She also wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown. The crown represents national unity, as it is made from one Northern crop, wheat, and one Southern crop, cotton. The portrait is encircled by two inscriptions and thirteen stars, which represent the original states. The inscriptions read, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1885."
On the reverse, a heraldic eagle holds arrows and an olive branch while spreading its wings. The arrows remind all of America's willingness to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates a preference for peace. The bird is partially encircled by an open wreath, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. Along the rim are two inscriptions, which offer the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
