Why add this 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection?
A dollar denomination silver coin was among the first products of the U.S. Mint after its establishment more than 225 years ago, a coin type which is still issued today as the modern American Silver Eagle. In the late 19th century, the silver dollar of the period was the Morgan Dollar. Introduced in 1878, the Morgan Dollar, designed by assistant engraver George T. Morgan, was issued by the Mint for a total of twenty-eight years. This example was struck from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint in 1885, its final mintage reported to be 17,787,000.
Exquisite Rendition of Lady Liberty
The obverse depicts Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with "LIBERTY" inscribed on the headband. The portrait is surrounded by "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1885" and thirteen stars.
The reverse features an eagle clutching an olive branch and bundle of arrows, with a laurel wreath curving below. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR." As a product of the Philadelphia Mint, the coin does not carry a Mint mark.
