Iconic American-style Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

Obverse: George T. Morgan chose an American-style model for Liberty for his obverse design, thus breaking with the tradition of depicting her as a Greek-style figure. The left-side portrait, which is encircled by thirteen stars and two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1885," shows Liberty wearing a crown, a ribbon, and a Phrygian cap. The crown is made from cotton and wheat, and the ribbon bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY."

Reverse: An eagle spreads its wings toward the rim while holding arrows and an olive branch within an open wreath on the reverse. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above the birds head. The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
