Obverse: The obverse, like the reverse, was designed by George T. Morgan. It features a left-side portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, and a crown made of one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. The image is encircled by two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1885," and thirteen stars.
Reverse: An open wreath partially encircles and eagle, which holds arrows and an olive branch, on the reverse. Above the bird's head is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Encircling the image and inscription are two rim inscriptions, which offer the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
