Why add this 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection?
The U.S Mint began production of its Morgan Silver Dollar series in 1878. The coin was released through the turn of the century, through 1904, then issued once more in 1921. This silver dollar coin designed by George T. Morgan is one of the 17,787,000 produced by the Philadelphia Mint in 1885. The coin is struck from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver with a diameter measuring 38.1 mm.
Stunning Rendition of Lady Liberty
Featured on the obverse is Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a Phrygian cap with a "LIBERTY" inscribed headband. Her hair is ornamented with cotton bolls, grains of wheat and oak leaves, to symbolize the importance of agriculture to the nation in the 19th century. The image is surrounded by "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1885" and thirteen stars.
On the reverse, a laurel wreath curves beneath a magnificently detailed eagle grasping an olive branch and arrows. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR." The absence of a Mint mark serves as confirmation of the coin's Philadelphia origin.
