1884-S Morgan Silver Dollars

Other than Carson City, which are ALL considered semi-key coins, San Francisco had the lowest mintage of all Morgan Silver Dollars in 1884. It wasn't the lowest S-minted coin in the series, but it was the lowest minted S-mint coin in the series to date.

Part of the reason for this recession in mintage was storage. So many S-mint Morgan Silver Dollars had been minted to date, the Mint was having a difficult time storing all of the coins not used in commerce. So fewer were made in 1884, with a mintage of just over 3 million coins.

The history of having an Extremely Fine Morgan Silver Dollar

Uncirculated coins have their place in numismatics, there no doubt about that. But there's something to holding a piece of history that was actually used in commerce that makes one imagine just where - and how - this coin was used. Had it been spent on a stage coach ride from city to city? Was it spent on a meal in the Chinatown district of San Francisco?

Dozens of images of your own can come to mind as you explore the history of San Francisco and California in general as you examine this beautiful piece of history.

Extremely Fine - what to expect

Extremely Fine, abbreviated either 'EF' or 'XF,' is a grade on a 70 point scale representing 40-45 on that scale with 1 being a barely recognizable coin to 70 being a near-perfect as-struck coin. It will have some light staining. It will have small flat points of wear on the highest points of both sides of the coin. It also has all the character expected in a lightly used coin that was minted well over a century ago!
