The Morgan Silver Dollar series was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1878, featuring a design celebrating the powerful national themes of liberty, freedom and peace created by assistant engraver George T. Morgan, nearly four decades prior to his appointment as Chief Engraver in 1917.
Gorgeous Personification of Liberty
Obverse: Lady Liberty is depicted as a young woman on the obverse, wearing a Phrygian cap with a "LIBERTY" inscribed headband and a wreath of entwined wheat grains, cotton bolls and oak leaves. The plant elements of the design symbolize of the impact of agricultural advancements to the country. Additional inscriptions include "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1884."
Reverse: Featured on the reverse is an eagle with three arrows and an olive branch in its grip. The national bird is surrounded by a laurel wreath and accompanied by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "ONE DOLLAR" and "O," the New Orleans Mint mark.
