Novel Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan, the seventh Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, designed both faces of this coin. Obverse: Morgan broke with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure and instead chose Anna Willess Williams, an American-style figure as his model. She wears a Phrygian cap and a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, as well as a crown, which represents unity, as it is made from one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. Two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1884," join with thirteen stars to encircle the effigy.
Reverse: An eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, symbols of military readiness and peace, as it spreads its wings within an open wreath. Above the bird's head is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" arch over and under the design, respectively, along the rim.
