Featuring George T. Morgan's Classic Liberty Design
This series takes its name from the man who created the designs that grace both of its faces, George T. Morgan. On the obverse is a left-facing Liberty. Morgan departed from the tradition of depicting her as a Greek style figure, instead opting to show her as an American style figure. On her head is a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave. Along with it are a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name and a crown made of cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. This was an important symbol of unity for a country that had recently been ravaged by a civil war. The motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" arches over the image, while the date, "1884," is included below it. Joining these inscriptions are thirteen stars, symbols of the original states.
The reverse bears a heraldic eagle that is partially encircled by an open wreath. The bird clutches an olive branch, a symbol of peace, and arrows, reminders that America is prepared to defend her values. Between the bird's outstretched wings is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Encircling this design are a pair of inscriptions on the rim. They offer the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
