Why order this 1884 Silver Morgan Dollar?
The Morgan Silver Dollar is perhaps the most iconic series in American numismatic history. Collectors and non-collectors alike often save the coins and pass them down as heirlooms from one generation to the next. Each coin was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. This piece was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in the seventh year of this historic series. It will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Featuring the Patriotic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan created the designs that appear on both faces of this coin. On the obverse is his historic Liberty design, which featured powerful symbols of unity and identity. Morgan used Anna Willess Williams, an American-style figure, as his model, breaking with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure. She has long, curly hair that is partially covered by a Phrygian cap. The cap traditionally identifies its wearer as a freed slave. Also on her head is a crown, a powerful symbol of unity made from one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. Along the rim are thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1884."
On the reverse, a heraldic eagle is partially encircled by an open wreath. The bird spreads its wings while clutching arrows, which represent America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which expresses a preference for peace. Above the bird's rim is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Rim inscriptions note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
