Why order this Toned 1884-CC Morgan Silver Dollar?
Every serious Morgan collection should have at least one 1884-CC Silver Dollar. The coin was long considered a rarity, but that changed with the release of the General Services Administration (GSA) hoard This piece, which has attractive toning, was part of that hoard. Part of a mintage of 1,136,000 pieces, this coin was struck from .7734 troy oz of .900 fine silver at the Carson City Mint. That mint, which holds a special place in the hearts and minds of collectors due to its association with the Wild Wild West, is represented by its "CC" mint mark, which is at the base of the reverse design. The coin comes encased in a holder that identifies it as part of the GSA hoard. Order now to receive the exact coin depicted on this page.
Featuring George T. Morgan's Historic Liberty Design
The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most beloved coins in American history thanks largely to George T. Morgan's obverse design. Morgan chose Anna Williams, an American-style figure, as his model, thus breaking with the tradition of showing Liberty as a Greek-style figure. She wears a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave, and a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY." Also on her head is a crown that was an important symbol of unity in a series that began not long after the Civil War. The crown is made from one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. Thirteen stars connect a pair of rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the date, "1884."
Morgan also designed the reverse, where an eagle spreads its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The arrows remind all that America is willing to defend her values when necessary, while the olive branch indicates a preference for peace. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the bird's wings, which stretch toward the rim. The bird is partially encircled by an open wreath. The name of the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and its face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
