The Carson City Mint and the Morgan Silver Dollar
These two related subjects, when put together, conjure up visions of stage coaches full of bagged Morgan Silver Dollars making their way across the Great Basin to deliver the much-needed tools of commerce to banks throughout the Old West. The dangers they faced from outlaws made the job a highly dangerous one, and made excellent material for the subject of scores of Hollywood movies long after these coins were minted.
These mind's-eye pictures are not too far from truth. Many Morgan Silver Dollars minted in Carson City were transported by stage coach and train to their final destinations. Many of the coins suffered a large number of bag marks from this rugged transport system, making higher grade coins rather scarce. Put that on top of low mintage, and you're looking at coin collector treasure!
NGC MS 65 Morgan Silver Dollars
This coin is graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as mint state 65. This is an above average coin in appearance with full luster and light contact marks that are mainly centered in non-prime focal areas. For many Morgan Silver Dollar issues, this is an above average grade. For Carson City silver dollars it is way above average - many of these coins were heavily beaten-up in transport, making MS65 a much more difficult grade to obtain than lower grades.
