Why buy this 1884-CC Silver Morgan Dollar?
Collectors looking to start or grow a collection of America's favorite coin would do well to pick up this 1884-CC Silver Dollar. The Morgan Series is famous for its depiction of Liberty in an American style. Prior to this series, she was typically depicted as a Greek-style figure. This coin bears the "CC" mint mark of the Carson City Mint, which many collectors romantically associate with the Wild West. It was struck on a .7734 oz planchet of .900 fine silver and was part of a mintage of 1,136,000 pieces.
Historic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Both faces of this coin bear the designs of George T. Morgan. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. He shows the figure wearing a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom from slavery, that covers much of her long, curly hair. Thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and the date, "1884," encircle the image along the rim.
The national bird, the bald eagle, holds arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The olive branch indicates a preference for peace, while the arrows serve as a reminder to all that America will defend her values when necessary. An open wreath partially encircles the bird, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between its wings. Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
Uncirculated MS66 with GSA Holder
This coin comes set in a holder that is only used for coins that were part of the GSA Hoard. The coin earned a Mint State 66 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it was very well struck. The coin is readily available up to Mint State 65 condition, but far fewer examples of Mint State 66 and above exist.
