Why purchase this New Orleans struck 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar?
Production and issuance of the U.S. Mint's Morgan Silver Dollar series began in 1878. Featuring designs created by assistant engraver George T. Morgan, the coin was minted from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver with a diameter measuring 38.1 mm. Final mintage of the 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar struck at Louisiana's New Orleans Mint is reported to be 8,725,000 coins.
George T. Morgan's Sensational Patriotic Designs
A portrait of Lady Liberty is centered on the obverse, her head adorned with a "LIBERTY" crown and a Phrygian cap symbolizing liberty and freedom. Thirteen six-pointed stars curve below, interrupted by the date of issue "1883." Inscribed "E PLURIBUS UNUM" above.
An eagle with three arrows and an olive branch in its grip is featured on the reverse. The gorgeous winged creature is partially framed by a ribbon-tied laurel wreath. Inscriptions include "O" (representing the New Orleans Mint), "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR." The designs each contain Morgan's initial "M." Look for it at the truncation of Liberty's neck on the obverse, and in the loop of the wreath's ribbon on the reverse.
