Why purchase this 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar and 1870-1880 Louisiana Baby Bond Set?
Production of the U.S. Mint's Morgan Silver Dollar series began in 1878, about a dozen years after the conclusion of the American Civil War. During the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War, the state-issued bank notes of the Southern States were heavily taxed by the Federal Government. Louisiana's solution to avoiding the tax was to issue small banknotes camouflaged as interest-bearing bonds. This set includes a New Orleans minted 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar paired with an 1870-1880 $5 State of Louisiana Baby Bond. The note's moniker of "Baby Bond" is derived from it design, which features the image of a young child in a bonnet.
Incredibly Detailed Silver Dollar Design by George T. Morgan
Liberty is personified on the obverse as a young woman wearing a Phrygian cap and a "LIBERTY" inscribed crown. Additional inscriptions include "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1883."
The reverse depicts an eagle grasping an olive branch and arrows, above curving branches of laurel. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "ONE DOLLAR" and the New Orleans Mint mark "O" are inscribed.
Exquisite Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Dollar and $5 Bond Set
The 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollar coin is ungraded, considered to be in Brilliant Uncirculated (GEM BU) condition. The coin is housed along with its companion 1870-1880 $5 State of Louisiana Baby Bond in a handsome presentation case, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
