Trailblazing Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Prior to George T. Morgans silver dollar, Liberty had always been designed using a Greek-style model. The Silver Morgan Dollar broke from that tradition through Morgan's use of an American-looking model, Anna Willess Williams. Shown in left-side portrait, she dons a Phrygian cap, used as a symbol of freedom from slavery, and a crown of cotton and wheat, important crops grown in the United States.
On the reverse is an eagle, which grasps arrows and an olive branch, symbols of military readiness and peace. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the bird's wings, while a laurel wreath arches under it from just below the wings. The image is encircled by rim inscriptions.
