Why buy this 1883-O Silver Morgan Dollar?
The Morgan Silver Dollar is an important piece of Americana. This iconic coin bears unifying, patriotic designs that broke the traditional mold in terms of its depiction of Liberty, who is shown as an American-style figure instead of a Greek-style one. This 1883-O piece comes from the fifth anniversary issue of the coin.
Featuring Patriotic Designs by George T. Morgan
Obverse: The obverse features a left-side portrait of Liberty that was designed by George T. Morgan. She wears a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, and a crown that symbolizes unity, as it consists of cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" AND "1883."
Reverse: Morgan also designed the reverse, where an eagle holds arrows and an olive branch inside an open wreath. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above the bird's head. Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
