The coin features a unifying obverse design, which features a crown of one Northern crop and one Southern one, fitting for a country that had been divided by a bloody civil war shortly before the coin was first issued. This coin was a part of the fifth anniversary issue of this storied series.
Novel Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Obverse: George T. Morgan broke with tradition by depicting Liberty as an American-style figure rather than a Greek-style one. She is shown here in left-side profile wearing a Liberty cap, a ribbon, and a crown of cotton and wheat. Along the rim are two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1883," and thirteen stars, symbols of the original states.
Reverse: Three reverse design consists of an open wreath and an eagle that holds arrows and an olive branch. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the eagle's wings. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rim.
