Featuring the Famous Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
The designs on both faces of this coin were created by George T. Morgan. On the obverse is his groundbreaking Liberty design, which depicts the allegorical figure in an American style rather than follow the tradition of showing her as a Greek-style figure. Wearing a crown, a ribbon, and a Phrygian cap, Liberty faces left. The ribbon bears an inscription of her name, while the cap indicates that she is a freed slave. The crown represents national unity for a country that has recently been through the Civil War. It consists of cotton and wheat, a Southern crop and a Northern one. The statutory motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" arches over the image, while the date, "1883," is inscribed below it. The two rim inscriptions are joined by 13 stars, which symbolize the nation's original states.
On the reverse is a heraldic eagle that has its head turned to face left. The bird stretches its wings upward and outward in a "V" formation, within which is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." In its talons are symbols of America's readiness to defend her values, arrows, and peace, an olive branch. An open wreath partially encircles the eagle. The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim above and below the eagle, respectively.
