The Morgan Silver Dollar series was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1878. The series features a rendition of Lady Liberty created by George T. Morgan, a Mint assistant engraver at the time. This San Francisco minted 1882 dated example is one of a 9,250,000 struck, each containing 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver.
Exciting Patriotic Imagery
A left facing portrait of Lady Liberty is centered on the obverse, her head adorned with a Phrygian cap and a "LIBERTY" inscribed headband ornamented with oak leaves, wheat grains and cotton bolls. The image is encircled by "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1882" and thirteen stars separated by the date.
A bald eagle appears on the reverse, with three arrows and an olive branch griped in its talons. The image symbolizing freedom, strength and peace includes the inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST," "ONE DOLLAR," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the "S" Mint mark of the San Francisco Mint.
