Why order this Morgan 1882-S Silver Dollar?

This 1882-S Morgan Dollar comes from the fifth issue of what may be the most famous coin series in American history. With their symbols of unity and identity, Morgans helped to heal a nation after it was torn apart by a bloody conflict. Like other issues in this series, this piece was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. It bears the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint, which struck 9.25 million of these coins in 1882.

Featuring the Classic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan

The coin's obverse features a left facing Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan, the depiction of the allegorical figure breaks from the tradition of depictions of Liberty as a Greek-style figure in favor of showing her as an American-style one. She wears a crown of cotton and wheat, one Southern crop and one Northern one, as well as a ribbon and a Phrygian cap. The ribbon bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," while the cap identifies her as a freed slave. Her long, curly hair is partially covered by the cap, while some covers the back of her neck. Thirteen stars, symbols of the country's original states, join two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1882," on the rim.

On the reverse, a heraldic eagle forms a V-shape with its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch. The olive branch is a traditional symbol of peace, while the arrows symbolize America's willingness to fight for her values. An open wreath partially encircles the bird, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. Like the obverse design, this one was created by Morgan. The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.

Well Preserved MS65

The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) determined that this coin was well struck and shows no traces of wear. That is why they graded it Mint State 65.
