Why purchase this About Uncirculated 1882 O/S Morgan Silver Dollar?
The U.S. Mint's Morgan Silver Dollar series was released for twenty-eight years. During that time period the coin was issued with more than ninety-five individual date/Mint mark combinations. In addition, the series features distinctions caused by die varieties. This 1882 dated coin produced by the New Orleans Mint is an example of one of those variations, struck with an "O over S" (O/S) Mint mark. A die intended for use at the San Francisco Mint was hastily modified for production in New Orleans, resulting in remnants of the "S" appearing within the circle of the "O."
Designs Celebrating Liberty and Freedom by George T. Morgan
The obverse features the portrait of Lady Liberty, partially surrounded by thirteen stars, her hair entwined with sprigs of cotton, wheat and oak. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY" upon her headband, "1882" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
The reverse depicts a bald eagle with a laurel wreath below. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," along with the coin's identifying "O/S" Mint mark.
