Today, many are familiar with the Morgan silver dollar because of its association with the Wild West era of United States history. These coins have been a top choice of collectors for decades. This Morgan dollar was struck in 1882 at the New Orleans Mint. However, this is actually an 1882-O/S variety, die variety VAM-5 specifically. This die variety is also known as the Broken O/S variety.

Morgan's Iconic Works of Art

Both sides of this coin feature designs by George T. Morgan. Liberty is depicted on the obverse. In this portrait she is wearing a small cap and facing the left. The date can be found near the bottom, it's in the middle of 13 stars.

The reverse shows Morgan's bald eagle design. The words "IN GOD WE TRUST" are inscribed between the tips of its wings. The face value is near the bottom of the design. If you look just above it, you will see the mint mark and the die variety can be identified here.


To have this Morgan dollar graded and encapsulated, it was submitted to the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). After it was carefully examined by their unbiased experts, it received the grade of About Uncirculated 55 (AU55), indicating that some minor signs of wear can be seen.
