1882-O Morgan Silver Dollar

Morgan Silver Dollars, so-called after their English born designer, George T. Morgan, are the iconic symbol of the "American' silver dollar. No other design serves to be the standard visual to the lay person when the words "Silver Dollar" are spoken. Much of this is because of the vast mintage over this long-running series of coins, but additionally the fact that these coins were used extensively in movies and in casinos give some fantastic idea to the younger generation that these coins were actually widely used in commerce.

Actually, silver dollars were widely distributed to be used in commerce, but many more were bagged and shipped to the orient for trade and many others were minted and stored in vaults for more than half a century before finally being sold to collectors.

The Bland-Allison Act of 1878 mandated the purchase of millions of dollars in silver annually to be minted into Morgan Silver Dollars to back the dollar with more than just gold. Although the Act was followed, there were far more coins than people to use them, so many sat in vaults awaiting use.

New Orleans, at the time this coin was minted, was still coming out of the reconstruction after the Civil War. Evan at that, they managed to mint millions of Morgan Silver Dollars every year. Even though many were minted, most were lacking luster and had very soft details. Finding well struck pieces is unusual, and finding coins with nice luster is even more unusual.

This coin is graded as mint state 63 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and is an unusually nice piece of Americana from the late 19th century.
