Why order this 1882-O Silver Morgan Dollar?
A man who survived diabetes during the Great Depression amassed a hoard of 13,000 Morgan Silver Dollars that is now known as the Great Southern Treasury Hoard. Diabetes was typically fatal during his life, but he not only survived but worked to ensure that he and his family would be safe from another financial collapse. He did this largely by collecting Morgans from the Treasury Hoard release of the 1960s. Like other Morgans, this coin was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. It bears the "O" mint mark of the New Orleans Mint, which struck 6,090,000 of these coins.
Patriotic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan, who lends his name to this series, designed both the obverse and the reverse. His obverse design is a left-side portrait of Liberty wearing a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name. She also wears a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave, and a crown of cotton and wheat. This crown was an important symbol of unity for a nation that was recently divided, as it includes a Southern crop and a Northern one. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" arches over the image, while the date, "1882," is inscribed below it. Those two inscriptions are connected by thirteen stars, which represent the original states.
On the reverse, an eagle spreads its wings while clutching arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace. The eagle is largely encircled by an open wreath, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. Rim inscriptions note the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
