Why add this superbly graded 1882-O Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection?
The Morgan Silver Dollar series was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1878, when the legality of a circulating American silver dollar denomination coin was restored by the Bland-Allison Act. The personification of Liberty by George T. Morgan chosen for the series was originally intended for a half dollar coin. This 38.1 mm diameter Morgan Dollar was struck from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver at the New Orleans Mint in 1882. A total of 6,090,000 coins were minted.
Classic Portrayal of Lady Liberty
Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse, framed by thirteen six-pointed stars. The left facing portrait features Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with cotton bolls intertwined with oak leaves and grains of wheat. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY" upon her headband, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1882."
The reverse illustrates a bald eagle holding an olive branch and three arrows, with a laurel wreath and the New Orleans Mint mark "O" located below. The image is accompanied by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR."
