Why order this 1882 Silver Morgan Dollar?
Morgan Silver Dollars are a special series and an important part of Americana. The coins helped the relatively young nation to forge a unified and unique identity in the years following the bloody Civil War. This coin comes from the fifth issue in that series. Part of a mintage of 11.1 million pieces, this coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. It will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, just as it was when it was first struck.
Featuring George T. Morgan's Historic Liberty Design
The series takes its name from George T. Morgan, who created both the obverse and reverse designs. On the obverse, Liberty faces left. She has long, curly hair that is partially covered by her Phrygian cap. The cap indicates that she is a freed slave. Liberty also wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name and a crown of cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. Unlike previous depictions of Liberty on American coinage, Morgan depicted her as an American-style figure rather than a Greek-style one. Her image is encircled by two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1882," and thirteen stars, which represent the country's original states.
On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stretches its wings toward the rim. Between the wings is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." In its talons, the bird clutches arrows, which represent America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace. An open wreath arches under the bird. Rim inscriptions encircling the image note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
