Why purchase this exceptionally graded 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar with a NGC Green Label?
The Morgan Silver Dollar series was launched by the U.S. Mint in 1878, featuring designs created by assistant engraver George T. Morgan which were originally intended for a half dollar coin. The passage of the Bland-Allison Act in 1878, which mandated the production of vast amounts of silver dollars, prompted to the Mint to quickly adapt Morgan's design to suit the dollar denomination coin.
Powerfully Patriotic Morgan Dollar Design
Obverse: A portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with a "LIBERTY" inscribed headband adorns the obverse. The image is surrounded by "E PLURIBUS UNUM," thirteen stars and "1881."
Reverse: The reverse design is rich with symbolism celebrating the national themes of freedom, strength, peace and victory, in the form of an eagle clutching three arrows and an olive branch, with a laurel wreath below. Inscriptions include "IN GOD WE TRUST," "ONE DOLLAR," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the Mint mark "S."
Breathtaking Mint State 66+
This 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar received the grade of Mint State 66 from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) for its remarkably sharp strike, beautifully finished surfaces and outstanding amount of original Mint luster. The coin was also awarded the designation of "Plus," which describes the silver dollar's magnificent eye appeal. The coin is sonically sealed in a protective holder accompanied by a NGC green certification label, which was developed as a collaborative effort between the NGC and RARCOA (Rare Coin Company of America). The presence of the green label is indication that in addition to the NGC's assessment, the coin first met or surpassed a set of quality guidelines created by RARCOA's independent team of numismatic experts regarding strike, luster and eye appeal.
